Townsville, Queensland, Australia

We are settling in slowly. Are body clocks are still set on SA time. The Jhb to Sydney flight was ok but the connecting flights were crappy.Arrived here at 10 Friday night.Picked up by my manager and his wife. Brought to our place he renting for us. First took us for a small drive on the beach front. Woke at 03:00am the Saturday morning. Slept off from 10:00 until 17:00. Went for a walk on the beach front. These people have water fountains along the beach front and even water troughs for the dogs. If you dog sh*ts on the grass you have to clean up. Came home and was awake till after the final......GO BOKKE!!!Slept until 11 then manager collected us for a braai at his place.

Its a bit on the humid side here but its bearable. Did the bank and tax thing this morning. Very different to back home. Got myself some wheels, not a BMW, but will do for now.Their is a huge amount of Fords and Holden XR6/XR8 muscle cars.

Most of the people that i have met are not as arrogant as thought. They are truly helpful and friendly. Its probably still early days though. I only got one cold shoulder from a young girl at the KFC. She probably got nothing the previous night or she caught her boyfriend with another girlie!!

I only start work next week Monday. Its a real culture shock this side. The people are really laid back here and don't have that SA work ethic.

Got my tax number and opened a bank account. very efficient service. I have placed an application for a rental property and will hear tomorrow what the outcome is. Got my internet connection up and running. That was crucial for contact back home. Broadband is the boss. Man its worth every cent...oops every dollar.

End of an Era

Today was the end of an era for me in Pietermaritzburg and with Hulamin. Its been an eventful almost 5 years. I really enjoyed working there and have made some great friends. I was well accepted by all the guys. A very strong bond has developed that cannot be broken. I have learnt a great deal and will take it with me on my new adventure. It all still seems so unreal. It was an honour to be associated with Hulamin and its people.

Lancashire Cricket Club Pmb SA

Just had the most wonderful send off last night. I am really proud to be associated with Lancs Cricket Club. I started playing at the club in 2003. It was daunting as i had not been playing club level for almost 10 years.

The guys really welcomed me as new member.I immediately felt as if i belonged there. Some of the guys who made it even easier - Uncle Bully,Lee,Frank,Donny,Kenrich,Gareth,Kerwin,Kevin,Kelos and skomjan, but to name a few.

I have seen guys coming thru the ranks and going on to be excellent players. When i joined Coach was up and coming and Sheldon was still a junior. Coach played for the Inland team and Sheldon has started with the under 19's. Coach played a few seasons in England as well.

It was and always will be an honour to wear my Lancs blazer.

English

I need to prove my English capability. Their is the IELTS that has too be taken. The problem is that they have a huge backlog and the bookings a sitting in the new year already. My agent said that i could submit school letters stating that i have been taught in English. I have received that and from the Tech as well. Now its a waiting game again!!! The joys of immigrating!!

The Wait

This is the worst part of this entire process. You dont know if it will be approved or not. I will only put in my resignation once i have confirmation of approval. Then its another 4 weeks notice period. I will then only land in Aus 2 weeks after notice completed.Your entire life is basically on hold. You are neither here or there!!

Soooo lonely

Took the wife and kids to visit her family up in Pretoria yesterday. The house is so quiet its frightening. Usually when i come home in the afternoons i get greeted by the wife and kids, but now i only get the chirps of Tweety bird, the parrot. I have to make my own supper and wash dishes. The laundry will end up at the Laundromat!!! They might be gone for 2 weeks. Its a challenge but I don't know if i am gonna survive!!!

Ushaka Marine World

Went to this place yesterday. It has been the first time we have been to such a place. We watched a dolphin display. These creatures are very intelligent. It must have taken quite a bit of training to get them to do those tricks. They are more obedient than my kids!!
We also watched a shark feed display. No wonder they are called predators! Scary animals those. They have a Bringle Bass also in the shark aquarium. That fish was huge. The biggest one weighed close to 200kgs. That s plenty of fish!! Well my kids enjoyed it!!

Man what a feeling!!

Transformers

Just took the kids to watch the movie Transformers. Not sure what to make of it. My son simply loved it. The special effects was also quite good. Some of the plot went astray in the making process. The lady actress is gorgeous!! Loved the Black police car decipticon. The "upgraded" Camaro was also stunning!!

Glenmeade

We have moved into a complex here in Lincoln Meade in pmb. What a nightmare!!!I wish that i could have my visa already so that we could get the hell outta this place. They have almost nightly break-ins.There are 91 units on this property. Its really scary. We all are sleeping in the one room with all the doors locked. The owner said she would put on safety gates.
The gates have been put up and the quality of sleep have improved. We are still not letting our guard down. The real fear is the confrontation.I dont mind them stealing everything that i own but they should just leave us alone.

My Passion - Cricket

I have been involved with this sport for almost 25 years now. It started at a young age when i used to play with my elder brother and his friends in our backyard in Kimberley. We play using a tennis ball and it was great fun.

When i was in Std.4 at Transvaal Road Primary School they needed a player to fill the team. My then Physical Training teacher asked if i were interested in playing. I immediately said i would. In the same breath i asked him would we be playing with a tennis ball and the answer he gave me did not take to well with me, but i ended up playing anyway. I got 1 wicket and took a blinder of a catch at mid on.

The following year,Std.5, and season i continued playing.Towards the end of the year i was invited to play trials to play tournament representing Griquas in Durban. I was selected as a batsmen with some bowling skills. We had a difficult tournament but very much enjoyable.

When i started high school it all stopped. Our high schools did not play cricket .That was very sad. We played friendly games among ourselves but that was it. I played rugby to fill the gap. Come Std.8 my cousin, Eugene Jacobs, persuaded me to start playing for Diamond Park Cricket Club.

It was difficult and a bit scary playing with older senior guys but man what a learning curve. That was the best 6 years of my life. Some of my team members have made senior provincial colours. We played some good cricket those years.Diamond Park was dis-banned a few years ago but the spirit lives on.

Some of my senior team mates that stand noticeably out, our player coach uncle Abe Williams, what a man. He made the experience of playing cricket absolutely awesome. He was an amazing swing bowler. He had time and time again baffled me in the practise nets. The others were the Moodley brothers,Mr.Daniels ,Barny Williams and last but not least Eugene Jacobs.

The my age crew consisted of Narian Tricam, our opening bowler,Nathan Goa,Nadeem Henderson,Conrad Alexander,Marcel and Ricardo Poonawassy,Findley Brooker and the Arthur twins.......man what a team we had. Later on the likes of Jason Brooker,Jason Harmse,Carlo Alexander and Riaan "Plante" Osman joined our team.Apologies to those who i have not mentioned.

Griqualand West will always be close to my heart. I will always follow their progress. They have grown in leaps and bounds over the years.

I relocated out of Kimberley in 1993 and in 1994 ended up in a place called Volksrust. From 1994 until 1997 i did not play any cricket. I started playing with Eskom in a social inter departmental night league that they were running. I played until i left in 2001. I played ,for the year i was in Middelburg ,for Columbus Stainless Crane Crew Team in their departmental league as well.

When i came to Pietermaritzburg in 2002 i started playing for Lancashire Cricket Club. This is where i learned quite a few tricks of the trade. They say "you are never to old to learn". I played and still do with young up and coming players who have played in England and really proven themselves. It feels good to be associated with a club who has such a high standard as Lancs. Thanx to all the support and acceptance that i have received from all the Lancs guys esp Frank,Lee,Vander,Bruce but to name a few.

With the looming move to Townsville i have knocked on the door of Wanderers Cricket Club. Andrew Symonds and Mitchell Johnson are products of Wanderers. It will be a new ball game for me playing there. I am really looking forward to that. I will take all that i have learnt over the years in order to make it an extraordinary playing experience.

Any comments please Email me!
